I was in Belize I the Bocawine Mayflower National Park 30 days ago and was bitten over 100 times mostly on the legs by what locals call batlass bugs, but are black flies. I had extreme itching that an 80mg mederol shot did not touch. I've never in my life experienced such horrid itching and was completely non functional for three days. Went on prednisone 20 days (60mg to start, 143 5mg pills in all), hydroxyzine sand topical steroid cream. The bites cleared up but 3 days afte stopping the prednisone the bites came back itchy and swollen like when I first got them. 30 days after being bitten I'm feeling systemically ill with extreme fatigue and unrelenting headache and abdominal pain.

I can only sympathise. For those who are unfortunate enough to react severely, the only solution is - don't go there again. Not much consolation I'm afraid. One question though, Have you had previous experience of black fly bites? In your home country perhaps?

I have used parsley leaves - cut and mixed with iced water - as a compress, directly on the affected skin . It is soothing and reduces the oedema, after some minutes.
I have employed the same method when DENGUE caused terrible itching and oedema of my hands. The symptoms began to disappear after 10 minutes; after some hours the swelling was almost gone. I tried also another method, to relieve itching and pain ,of knees, wrists and feet due to DENGUE; PROPOLIS Extract applied to the named sites , followed by a WHITE CLAY compress. They might have anti-inflammatory effect. The suggested amount of cut parsley leaves : 2 - 3 tbs in 150-200 ml iced water . I hope you may get good results of the methods. I am retired researcher related to biocontrolling methods of some infections, besides appropriate technologies applied to Public Health .Thanks for your attention and good luck !

I've just had 40 hours of blackfly fever following my first bites of the season in Atlantic Canada. Massive headache, chills for hours so every joint and muscle is screaming, nausea, high thirst, vomiting. I've skep a lot. The flies'll be here for five weeks. Repellent and avoidance will be my strategy, but very glad to hear of this topical ointment. In my experience, my systemic reactions calm down with subsequent bites, but the bite sites often get worse. Thanks.
