Hello there, in my experience I've encountered only large (2mm) black flies in Venezuela near rivers in the forest (Puri Puri the local name) and in South Korea (Mokpari, local name), near forest and rivers around dusk time. Pretty annoying, aggressive and noisy when close to the ear and moreover a huge effort to catch them. This week for the first time in my life (I'm 42) reading a book on the beach in the surrounding of Genova around dusk time a swarn of almost invisible black dots attacked me. I found just assume crushed black dust under the finger when I occasionally hit my skin after feeling itching (half a millimeter in size) I've counted 20 bites the day after on my limbs. The itching lasted more then 5 days. Is it still a black fly? How do you call them? Are always this small? Looking forward for your answers, Cheers David from Italy

Hard to identify from the description. Were they biting in daytime? If so they sound like a species of Culicoides midges called Leptoconops whose bites can itch for days. they are usually associated with tropical white sand beaches such as in the Seychelles, Madagascar, California or Florida. They breed in patches of permanently damp sand.. Can you provide a photo?
